What Is a Memorial Pillow?

A Memorial Pillow is a pillow that is created specifically to honor someone we love who passed away.

Often it is created with a personalized design to commemorate the deceased.

One of the most popular ones is created by sewing them from the clothes of our loved ones.

By its nature which is huggable, memorial pillows automatically enable a feeling of still being close with our loved one’s presence and memory, hugging them in our comfort when in need.

It is affordable and a heartwarming, unique way to memorialize and remember our loved ones.

Why Do People Make Memorial Pillows Form Shirts?

First, just as with other memorials, the primary purpose of a Memorial Pillow is to honor a loved one’s life.

People use the shirts of their loved ones to create memorial pillows because it’s a lovely remembrance while also making use of what’s left of the deceased: their clothes.

Our choices with our loved one’s clothes after their death, if not keeping them, are divided into either giving (or selling) them to other people or throwing them away.

Some of us don’t want to throw or give away our loved one’s remaining clothes. Clothes are so personal and unique to every person. It can feel like throwing away the last remaining parts of them that are still with us.

Keeping all of them, might not be practical. You can use the space for other things.

Pillows are very versatile and have a high usage value in one’s home. Integrating our loved one’s clothes into them as memorial pillows is a great idea. You could place it in your room, guest room, or in your living room.

It’s a subtle yet beautiful way of remembering your loved ones. One’s clothes usually portray their owner’s personality and character.

Having those traits created into memorial pillows can bring warmth and comfort to the ones who are being left behind. Making our loved one’s memories alive in our home.

Plus it’s a pillow! Whenever we miss our loved ones, we can sit on the couch, hug them to accompany us, and reminisce the beautiful memories that we have of our beloved ones.

How Do You Make a Memorial Pillow From Clothes?

Making a memorial pillow on your own is easy! Here are the steps:

  1. Measure the width between the sleeve seams of your loved one’s shirt.

This will help you decide on what size pillow insert fill you would need to stuff it in! The width length should be larger than the pillow fill.

For example, if your shirt’s width between the sleeve seams is 15 inches, now you know you could use a 14-inch pillow fill for it.

Because pillow fills come in even-inch increments starting at 14 inches-24 inches, it would be best to round down your number to the nearest odd-inch measurement.

  1. Start cutting the side seams and around the sleeve seams.

Cut the side seams and around the sleeve seams carefully.

  1. Cut the collar on the backside and any other seams off.

So that your pillow is all fabric and won’t have any seams. Once that is done, cut the collar of the front side as well.

  1. Start Ironing the shirt.

When you have cut and separated all the seams, start ironing the shirt so it will be a nice flat panel.

Try ironing starting from the backside of the front panel to make sure that all of the fabric by the button is nice and smooth before moving on to anything else.

  1. Start cutting the fabric

Cut the sides by using a roll cutter for clean results! Start with the back panel. Cut the shirt until it comes to the desired length (one that you decided earlier in step 1), for example, 15 by 15-inch square to fit the 14-inch pillow fill.

Do the same for the front panel. Make sure to position your button in the center.

Divide your length by 2, to know the exact position where the button should be when measured from the outer side of the panel.

  1. Start sewing the two sides together!

With both cuts, you can begin sewing them together. If you’re sewing with a polo or a t-shirt, you might want to leave one side unsewn, so that you can insert your pillow form from it.

If it’s a shirt with a button, you can sew all the sides, and insert the pillow into it, simply unbutton it!

  1. Cut the corners.

So that when you turned it inside out, those corners will look nice and neat.

  1. Finally, insert the pillow fill!

And there you have it! Your wonderful memorial pillow. Unique and sweet.

What Do You Put On a Memorial Pillow?

If you’re not using shirts for your memorial pillows and preferred to create one with printing or embroidery, you might want to see these ideas below on what to put on it:

  • Photos of your loved ones

Including pictures of your loved ones on the pillow is a sweet remembrance for them. Put into the design 2-3 or even more photos. Make sure to arrange all the photos nicely so that it will not look too cluttered!

  • Quotes or sayings from your loved ones

For example, your beloved late Mom often said. “Oh, we’re blessed! Always be grateful!”.

You could consider including that quote in the design of the pillow!

  • Picture of your loved one’s favorite place or objects

Perhaps your beloved late Dad loves his old Jeep. You could include a picture of the jeep in the design, and perhaps add one like “Dad’s favorite Jeep” to it.

It’s a memorable and nice way to remember him.

What Is the Best Material for a Memorial Pillow?

For the pillow fill, many people use Fairfield’s Poly-fil. Good quality at affordable prices.

If you’re creating a memorial pillow with your loved one’s used clothes, there isn’t a really bad choice of clothes fabric as long as it’s still durable and in good condition.

You don’t necessarily need to have the most comfortable shirt material. You’re not wearing one, it’s for the pillow!
